My suggestion to create a new day to celebrate our first responders isn't new. State Representative Michael Capuano has submitted proposed legislation calling for a National First Responders Day, to be determined by the President. The legislation, H.R. 5425, has been referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
But I think today, Major League All Star Day in America's Finest City represents an opportunity, in light of the recent nightmare in Dallas, to grab the attention of the country, and the world, to re-order the headlines,
and to focus the attention of the country on what we have in common, on what we love, not on what we hate.
When negative events dominate the media, we are promoting those subversions by default.
I want to establish a new narrative. I want to put our real heros back in the headlines where they belong. I want to deny those headlines to the forces of negativity and hatred.
Starting a new tradition, whether it is Representative Capuano's 'First Responders Day' or 'Americas Best All Stars Day' seems like a good idea, whose time has come.
