My suggestion to create a new day to celebrate our first responders isn't new. State Representative Michael Capuano has submitted proposed legislation calling for a National First Responders Day, to be determined by the President. The legislation, H.R. 5425, has been referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. But I think today, Major League All Star Day in America's Finest City represents an opportunity, in light of the recent nightmare in Dallas, to grab the attention of the country, and the world, to re-order the headlines, and to focus the attention of the country on what we have in common, on what we love, not on what we hate. When negative events dominate the media, we are promoting those subversions by default. I want to establish a new narrative. I want to put our real heros back in the headlines where they belong. I want to deny those headlines to the forces of negativity and hatred. Starting a new tradition, whether it is Representative Capuano's 'First Responders Day' or 'Americas Best All Stars Day' seems like a good idea, whose time has come. Dear Mayor Faulconer, I would like to see you declare July 12th 2016, and every July 12th in the future, America's Best All Star Day in San Diego, as a day to celebrate our emergency first responders, our police and sheriffs, our firefighters and health services professionals. We should organize a street demonstration in the gaslamp district during the baseball game to show America we care more about the safety and security of our country, the protection of our constitutional freedoms and the lives of all of our citizens than any sporting event or other pastime. We need to redirect our city and our nation's attention to much greater needs as we confront some of the most divisive and threatening days of our nations history. Please, take on the leadership role so desperately needed at this defining moment! There is a lot of conjecture about who Trump will choose as his running mate. My choice is Admiral William McRaven, the man who led the Navy Seal raid on Osama Ben Laden's outpost, and the former Commander of the Pentagon's Special Operations Forces.
McRaven is a retired military leader of the highest caliber, a man who is a leader of men, and the kind of experienced, disciplined and rational military expert this country needs to complete the eradication of the scourge of Islamic terrorism currently expanding around the globe.He would bring a sober and focused sense of urgency to the Washington aristocracy. Regarding the perversity and seriousness of the Jihadi threats and the paralysis of our military by political correctness, McRaven said: "During my past several years in uniform, I watched in disbelief how lawmakers treated the chairman, the service chiefs, the combatant commanders and other senior officers during Congressional testimony. These officers were men of incredible integrity, and yet some lawmakers showed no respect for their decades of service. I saw the DOD Inspector General's Office frequently act as judge and jury, apparently accountable to no one, dismissing the recommendations of the services and ruining officer's careers. I watched time and again how political correctness and pressure from Capitol Hill undermined command authority and good order and discipline." As Vice President, his experience and record would put the world on notice that America is willing to step up and lead the war against barbarism. And he could also redefine the role, making it a much more proactive, functional and international position that would allow the President to focus more on the domestic side of our country's many needs. In his famous graduation address to the University of Texas Austin, he pointed out the ten things he thinks make people more effective, and it all starts with making your bed every morning. This is a perfect example of what all of us Americans need to do to get our country back on track, to personally offer support for the hard work of self government and living in a state of freedom. This is the kind of specific things that will be required to revitalize the concept of Americanism. I think his brand of serious teamwork, would put the oft noted image of Trump as a selfish, arrogant and unprepared candidate, in an entirely different light. McRaven is someone who would not overshadow Trump, because as a longtime military man, he knows something about rank and protocol. And, more importantly, he knows how important it is to work together to achieve goals. America has a very big challenge: we must reestablish a patriotic zeal in our youth, reinvigorate a disengaged and self absorbed generation of boomers, and lead a talented but confused generation of X'ers and millennials. This is exactly what McRaven has been doing for the past 30 years! So before we go any further, I urge Donald Trump to invite Navy Admiral Bill McRaven aboard his campaign to make America great again. Lets get started, let's make our bed. Do you feel like I do that a bunch of lawyers are running this country into the ground? That they are purposely reinterpreting laws to fit their own needs, redefining what is a crime, what 'represents' our values, and who should be held accountable? Some will say it is irrelevant that most of the people in the halls of Congress and the inner circle of subordinates in the White House are lawyers. But it can't be a coincidence that most of the problems our country is experiencing are a direct result of the abandonment of the principles established by our Founding Fathers via the Constitution of the United States of America. As I wrote in my book, Turn Right At Lost: Recalculating America, some of us seniors feel like the youth in our country are simply rejecting any wisdom we have to offer. But in a much larger sense, the Obama administration, and their heir apparent Hillary Clinton, are rejecting the wisdom of the Constitution, preferring to rewrite it, much as the Donkeys did in Orwell's Animal Farm. The idea that she had no ill intent when she broke numerous laws about handling secret emails including sensitive documents is totally and completely irrelevant. Does a drunk intend to kill a pedestrian when driving drunk? 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.' When the United States of America declared its independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1776, the Biggest Brexit of All Time occurred. When those upstart American traitors decided to go it alone, the Empire was caught napping. Britain's expansive adventure, sending explorers to the new frontier, had suddenly rearranged the world order, not just for the immediate future, but for all time. At least up until now. Now, America is at a nexus: do we want to continue this experiment, the idea that free people, with the help of a core Judeo-Christian belief system, can successfully run a country, or do we want to go back to a large, top-down, secular style of government? Will the Clinton-Sanders model of nanny-state controls, massive bureaucracies deciding who the winners and losers are, prevail? Or will this generation choose instead to put the future of our Liberty back in the hands of the voters who are engaged, employed, and serving their country? For nearly a quarter of a century, as rough and tumble as it has been, there still is no better example of how a civilized group could organize itself in a way that starts with freedom and ends with freedom. But because it fosters a competitive atmosphere where there are clear winners and losers, some long for egalitarianism. That is an inherent result of a free society. Protecting and promoting the Flame of Liberty, passing the baton on to our children, and working with and trying to bring along those with opposing views, is the lifelong burden of those that cherish freedom. Please, America, make it your priority to continue the legacy of self government, voluntary participation in social order and the inherent value in the freedom of mankind. Without strong American leadership, the idea of Liberty will cease to exist. |
